Something I’ve always wished I knew how to do was…sing. Many like to argue that everyone can sing, so let me correct myself–I wish desperately that I could sing well. The more I howl the less I sound like a wolf seducing the moon and more like a rabid dog. I’m not being hard on myself. I’m speaking from a place of acceptance. I may not sound anything north of good, however it won’t stop the love I have for inging (that is singing without the “s” which is the part that makes you sound good).
A cousin and I would go to a hole in the wall bar on Karaoke night every week. Despite my shortcomings, we were the crowds favorites. Imagine a couple of Black girls going into a place filled with bikers and randoms that all happen to be white. I mean, we were already standing out from the crowd and as you can probably guess, they would shout in excitement when we entered. At least that’s how I remember it and no one can prove me wrong. I stood up at the mic, cleared my throat, and let the my vocal cords command everyone’s attention. All except those playing pool, talking, or working. Yup, those two ladies with the older gentleman all watched me in awe. Now I’m being hard on myself. Honestly, the bar wasn’t that big and those inside were all supportive of our talents. I have to admit, I thought my cousin was a better singer than I (when she could remember to read the lyrics).
The bar had shortly after closed down. Before you think of it, no it wasn’t because of our built-in musical instruments. We then moved our talents to the near-by bowling alley. There was an enclosed bar in the center of the building where they held Karaoke there during the fall and winter months. It’s probably one of the things I miss the most aside from spending time with family and friends. We have tried Karaoke nights over FaceTime with a couple of friends. My cousin still can’t seem to read the lyrics correctly. I still sound like a rabid dog and my friends are supportive. My poor husband tolerates it all, whenever it happens that is. Unfortunately, we don’t Karaoke often and are due for a bit of fun.
